Oilseed and oil processing technology-Oilseed flaking

Jan 04, 2021
Oilseed flaking is a process of pressing the oil from grains into thin slices by mechanical action. The purpose of oilseed flaking is to destroy the cell tissue of the oilseed and create favorable conditions for cooking, so that the oil can be separated smoothly during pressing or solvent extraction.

The basic requirement for the flakes:
The flakes should be thin, even surface, less powder, no oil, softer if pinched with hands, spread out if let go.
The
fines content should not exceed 10%~15 under the sieve with 1 mm sieve.
Flake thickness :
Soybeans below 0.3 mm;
Cotton kernels below 0.4 mm;
Rapeseeds below 0.35 mm;
Peanut kernels below 0.5 mm.

After flaking, the flakes are heated to control the immersion moisture to about 7% and the powder content to be controlled below 10%. When the thickness of the cotton flakes increase to more than 0.4 mm, even if the amount of solvent is increased, it is difficult to achieve a lower residual oil rate. Therefore, it is necessary to use a high-pressure hydraulic flaking roll to control the thickness of the flakes between 0.25-0.30 mm and the flakes are solid. This will not increase the powder degree of the flakes, but also facilitate the extraction of the solvent. Commonly used equipment is: single-stage flaking roll, multi-stage flaking roll.
